We called them friends because there wasn’t a better word for it. But really, at the beginning, they were just two very small girls whose mothers sat them down on the same blankets near the same piles of toys.
Alice is about 8 weeks older. Which was a lifetime – literally – when they first met. It was the difference between cereal and solids, first smiles and first teeth.
And now it’s almost nothing.
Maybe it still would be overstating things to call them friends – real friends – but not by very much.
